PIKEVILLE – After capturing its second straight 58th District title, South Floyd fell to 57th District runner-up Magoffin County. Determined Magoffin County outlasted South Floyd 61-57 in the first round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Saturday night.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 22-8 and advanced to the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament.

South Floyd ended its season 17-13 with the loss.

Magoffin County shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field. The Hornets finished 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line.

Trenton Russell led Magoffin County with a game-high 25 points. Accompanying Russell in double figures for the Hornets, Jaren Lovely scored 21 points. Combined, Russell and Lovely drained seven 3-point field goals.

Magoffin County owned a single-digit lead at the conclusion of each quarter, edging South Floyd 14-13 in the first quarter. Following a 12-7 second-quarter run, Magoffin County led 26-20 at halftime.

The Hornets took a 40-34 lead out of the third quarter.

South Floyd shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field. The Raiders were 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from 3-point range.

South Floyd shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the free throw line.

Andrew Tackett paced South Floyd with a team-high 24 points. Joining Tackett in double figures for the Raiders, Poppa Trammell tossed in 11 points.

Brady Conn (seven points), J.R. Tackett (six points), Brady Ousley (five points) and Jake Collins (four points) provided additional scoring for the Raiders in the season-ending loss.

In the other first round games in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament it was East Ridge 62, Allen Central 51; Johnson Central 62, Belfry 53 and Lawrence County 77, Pikeville 64.
