PIKEVILLE – New Allen Central baseball head coach Jeff Aldrich won in his debut over the weekend. Allen Central edged host Pikeville 5-4 in a baseball season-opener on Saturday.
Aldrich is in his first season as the head coach of the Allen Central baseball program. He replaced Kevin Spurlock, who stepped away from the diamond after guiding the Rebels in the 2015 season.
On the mound for Allen Central, Austin Lawson earned the win and teammate Steven Howard recorded the save. Lawson and Howard are veteran hurlers for the Rebels.
Allen Central catcher Wyatt Crisp threw out three Pikeville players. Crisp threw out a Panther attempting to steal to end the game.
The Rebels scored first and never trailed. Allen Central visited non-district opponent Pikeville after facing the longtime 15th Region foe in a scrimmage game earlier in the month.
Jeff Samons – the number two hitter in the Allen Central batting order – scored twice. Howard, Cameron Blevins and Rico Dominguez scored one run apiece for the Rebels in the thrilling win.
Helping his pitching cause at the plate, Lawson delivered an RBI for the Rebels, who led 4-0 at the conclusion of the second inning.
Allen Central plated all of its runs in the first four innings.
Pikeville manufactured two of its four runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame. But the Panthers could never pull even with the Rebels.
Pikeville pitcher Isaac Lucas suffered the loss.
An Allen Central-Belfry baseball game scheduled for Monday was cancelled. Allen Central is scheduled to visit Paintsville on Thursday.
