PRESTONSBURG – Three Prestonsburg pitchers combined to throw a no-hitter as the Blackcats rolled past visiting 15th Region foe East Ridge 17-0 in five innings in new head coach Shawn Hager’s debut at StoneCrest Park on Tuesday evening.
Prestonsburg hurlers Reece Ison (three innings), John Cooksey (one inning) and Scott Stapleton (one inning) combined to throw the no-hitter.
“Along with our good pitching, we hit the ball very well,” Hager said, following his team’s victory in the highly-anticipated season-opener.
Offensively, several players contributed for the Blackcats.
Hager, who guided Sheldon Clark to the 2015 15th Region All “A” Classic baseball title, serves as an assistant coach on the Prestonsburg football and boys’ basketball coaching staffs.
Prestonsburg is scheduled to host Powell County on Friday night. The Blackcats are slated to face Leslie County, Lawrence County, Pike County Central, Magoffin County and Paintsville later in the month.
Hager will have an opportunity to capture another 15th Region All “A” Classic championship in early-April. The Blackcats are scheduled to meet Floyd County Conference/58th District rival Betsy Layne in the opening round of the regional small-school basketball tournament on April 5.
Prestonsburg is the reigning 58th District champion. The Blackcats edged Allen Central 1-0 in the 2015 58th District title game at Drift Park.
