Staff Report

PIKEVILLE – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced on Tuesday that University of Pikeville senior Kayla Day has been named a 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete.

In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved at least junior academic status.

This is the first scholar-athlete award for Day who ended her four-year playing career with a loss in the program’s first NAIA Fab Four appearance on Monday. The Ashland native played in 33 games this season, scoring 3.5 points per contest and dishing out nearly three assists per game.

Day scored a season-best 11 points early in the season against Ohio-Lancaster and had a career-high 10 assists in the season opener against Midway.
