RACELAND – Visiting Prestonsburg pulled away to beat Raceland 18-8 in five innings via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s 10-Run Mercy Rule on Friday.
The Blackcats halted a three-game Raceland win streak.
With the win, Prestonsburg moved to 3-0.
Raceland dropped to 3-2 with the loss.
The Blackcats are under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hager, who guided Sheldon Clark to a 15th Region All “A” Classic championship in 2015.
Reece Ison provided the biggest boost at the plate for the Blackcats. Ison, one of the 15th Region’s top baseball players, belted a grand slam and doubled for the Blackcats, finishing with two hits and four RBIs.
Prestonsburg pitcher Grant Martin worked three innings and earned the win.
Martin, John Cooksey and Scott Stapleton added two hits and two RBIs apiece for the Blackcats in the convincing victory.
Wesley Hager and Bryce Tucker contributed two hits and one RBI each for visiting Prestonsburg.
Nick Rowe chipped in one hit and two RBIs for the Blackcats, who boast additional wins over East Ridge and Powell County.
Another Prestonsburg batter, Ryne Slone, delivered one hit and an RBI for the Blackcats in the win.
Early in the 2016 season, Prestonsburg ranks as one of the most offensive-heavy baseball clubs in the 15th Region. Through its first three games, Prestonsburg had outscored opponents 39-3.
The Blackcats and Rams aren’t scheduled to meet again during the current campaign.
