PRESTONSBURG – Following a two-run loss to defending 15th Region champion Lawrence County over the weekend, Prestonsburg didn’t waste any time returning to the win column. The Blackcats, under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hager, pulled away to defeat visiting Pike County Central 11-1 in six innings in an early-season high school baseball game at StoneCrest on Monday.
Longtime 15th Region rivals, Prestonsburg and Pike County Central met for the first time in the 2016 season.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 4-1.
Pike County Central dropped to 2-6 with the loss.
A pair of Prestonsburg pitchers limited Pike County Central batters throughout the non-district contest.
Prestonsburg pitcher Nick Caudill worked four innings and earned the win.
John Cooksey tossed two innings for the Blackcats.
Cooksey (two hits, two RBIs), Ryne Slone (two hits, one RBI), Scott Stapleton (two hits, three RBIs), Reece Ison (two hits, one RBI), Grant Martin (one hit, one RBI), Wesley Hager (three hits, one RBI), Bryce Tucker (one Hit, one RBIs), Nick Rowe (one hit, two RBIs) and Bailey Slone (one hit, one RBI) also contributed at the plate for Prestonsburg in the convincing victory.
Stapleton, Ison and Martin each smacked a double for the homestanding Blackcats, who will look to capture another 58th District championship in May.
Prestonsburg is slated to visit Pike County Central on April 16.
