ANDERSON, Ind. – It was an impressive run for the University of Pikeville women’s bowling team, fighting out of the losers bracket with three wins, to reach the finals of the NAIA Invitational for the second straight season before falling to Robert Morris (Ill.) 3-0 on Sunday.
Second-seeded UPIKE, which won the 2015 NAIA title over Robert Morris 3-0, came up on an 11th-seeded Eagles team that was red hot at the event, beating the Bears 168-160, 185-166 and 246-189 to claim the championship. It was an eventful day for RMU which also won the men’s title.
Prior to the loss, UPIKE had a strong run through the losers bracket as it faced elimination in each match. First up was a hard-fought 3-2 win over St. Ambrose, fighting back from an 0-2 deficit to win three straight games.
Next, UPIKE topped Marian (Ind.) by the same 3-2 score, as it won 203-168 in the deciding fifth game.
To reach the finals, UPIKE took down top-seeded Webber International (Fla.) 3-0 by scores of 168-164, 203-147 and 162-155.
While the Bears were playing their fourth match of the day, it was just the second for Robert Morris which ran the table in the winners bracket.
