Blackcats blank Betsy Layne in All ‘A’ Classic

PRESTONSBURG – Prestonsburg cruised in the opening round of the 15th Region All “A” Classic, blanking 58th District/Floyd County Conference baseball rival Betsy Layne 18-0 in five innings on Tuesday.

With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 7-1 and advanced in the 15th Region All “A” Classic.

Betsy Layne dropped to 1-8 and was eliminated from the regional small-school tournament with the loss.

On the mound, Prestonsburg pitcher Wesley Hager worked two innings and earned the win. Hager is in his first season with the Blackcats after transferring from Sheldon Clark.

Hager was one of three Prestonsburg players to pitch during the tournament matchup. Nick Rowe worked two innings and Zion Echols faced Betsy Layne betters during one of the Bobcats’ at-bat.

Helping his pitching cause at the plate, Hager delivered two hits and two RBIs for the Blackcats.

Bailey Slone provided two hits and one RBI for the Blackcats in the convincing victory.

Ryne Slone connected for one hit and added an RBI of his own as Prestonsburg won easily.

Aiding the Prestonsburg offensive attack and leading the Blackcats on the basepaths, Scott Stapleton provided one hit and a game-high three stolen bases.

Rowe, Echols, Seth Ramsey, Nick Caudill, Tanner Hicks, Dawson Hamilton and Blake Sizemore added one hit apiece for the Blackcats.

In other games in the 15th Region All “A” Classic it was Paintsville 5, Allen Central 2; Pikeville 21, South Floyd 0 and Shelby Valley 15, East Ridge 1.

Prestonsburg is under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hager, who guided Sheldon Clark to the 2015 15th Region All “A” Classic championship.
