PRESTONSBURG – Prestonsburg pulled away to beat longtime rival Pikeville 12-2 in five innings via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Mercy Rule in the championship game of the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Friday night.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 9-1.
Pikeville dropped to 7-6 with the loss.
The Blackcats reached the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship game after outlasting former state champion Paintsville 8-6 in the semifinals of the regional small-school tournament on Thursday.
Head coach Shawn Hager guided the Blackcats to the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship in his first season. Hager coached Sheldon Clark to the 2015 15th Region All “A” Classic baseball title.
“I am very proud of this team and the way they played in the championship game,” Hager said, following Prestonsburg’s convincing victory over Pikeville in the title matchup. “I have been proud all year because several games this team could have laid down and lost but they kept fighting and pulled out the win. This is a good group and I enjoy coaching them.”
Prestonsburg senior pitcher Grant Martin earned the win.
Helping his pitching cause at the plate, Martin delivered two hits and two RBIs for the Blackcats.
Reece Ison paced Prestonsburg at the plate, providing two hits and three RBIs. Ison legged out a triple for Prestonsburg in the championship-clinching win.
Scott Stapleton and Wesley Hager added two hits and one RBI apiece for the Blackcats.
Other offensive contributors for Prestonsburg were Bryce Tucker (one hit, two RBIs), Nick Rowe (one hit, two RBIs), Ryne Slone (one hit) and Bailey Slone (one hit).
