RICHMOND – Eastern Kentucky University golfer Becky Sharpe won the 2015 Women’s Kentucky State Amateur championship on Friday at the Danville Country Club. EKU players have won four of the last seven State Am championships and a Colonel has been in the finals five straight years.
The rising senior defeated Ellen Kehoe of the University of Louisville, 4 and 3 in the finals to capture her first Kentucky State Am title.
The Williamsburg native beat Laura McQueen (5 and 4) in the first round, Kaitlyn Riley (5 and 4) in the second round and Elsa Moberly (2 and 1) in the quarterfinals. A victory over Hannah Sublett (5 and 4) propelled Sharpe to the finals.
Sharpe earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors with EKU in 2014-15. She was second on the team and eighth in the OVC with a 76.86 stroke average, third-best single season average in program history. Sharpe posted five top-10 finishes in 12 events, including two top-5 performances. She shot two rounds of 71, which is tied for the fourth-lowest single round in EKU history. Sharpe shot a final round 74 at the NCAA South Bend Regional to help Eastern place 15th, the best finish ever by an OVC team.
Former Colonel April Emerson won the Kentucky State Amateur in 2009, 2011 and 2013. She had made it to the finals four straight years before 2015.
