PRESTONSBURG – Led by Tyler Smith and Will Boyd with second and third-place finishes, respectively, the University of Pikeville men’s golf team captured the UPIKE Spring Invitational championship on Sunday at StoneCrest Golf Course.
Smith shot a two-day 148 (77-71) to finish as the runner-up, while Boyd shot a 149 (74-75). Shawnee State’s Josh Zornes took top medalist honors with a 147 (73-74) despite his team finishing fifth overall.
UPIKE won the team title by 13 strokes over Campbellsville as Kelly Porter finished third on the team and seventh overall with a 154 (80-74) and Bradley Litzinger tied for eighth place overall after carding a 156 (78-78).
Burgess Clark finished just outside the top 10 in 11th with a 157 (79-78).
The Bears improved 10 strokes on their opening-round score to finish with 606 (308-298) total strokes, followed by Campbellsville with a 619 (313-306) and Georgetown rounding out the top three with a 634 (327-307).
Playing as an individual, UPIKE’s Garret Bevins tied for eighth place overall with a score of 156 (80-76).
Smith played the best in the field on par-four holes with a score of two-over par, while Boyd tallied the most birdies with seven.
UPIKE is headed into the postseason. The Bears will compete in the Mid-South Conference Championship in Bowling Green at the Bowling Green Country Club April 18-20.
