PRESTONSBURG – The University of Pikeville women’s golf team shot the lowest round in program history on Sunday, carding a 311 to finish second out of nine teams at the UPIKE Spring Invitational at StoneCrest Golf Course.
It was a 20-stroke improvement from the first round as the Bears finished with a score of 642 overall, trailing only Campbellsville with a 620 (315-305). Spalding rounded out the top three with a score of 704 (370-334).
Scores drastically improved on Sunday with warmer temperatures and sunshine. The opening round was windy, cold and damp as a late winter-like storm passed through the area.
Brittany Brophy paced the Bears, shooting a career-best eight-over par 152 (79-73) to finish second overall. Campbellsville’s Cassidy Scantland took top medalist honors with a 150 (75-75), topping Brophy by just two strokes.
Four out of the five UPIKE starters finished in the top 10, including Brophy, Christen Cropper in fourth overall with a career-best 157 (79-78), Ayla Rhinesmith in ninth with a 166 (86-80) and Lauren Vice rounding out the top 10 after carding a 167 (87-80).
Vice led the tournament in par-three scoring with a one-over par showing and Brophy tied Scantland for the best par four scoring at five over.
UPIKE will compete in the Mid-South Conference Championship in Bowling Green at the Bowling Green Country Club April 18-20.
