PRESTONSBURG – Prestonsburg head coach Shawn Hager guided the Blackcats to a win over his old team late last week. Prestonsburg beat visiting Sheldon Clark 10-0 in five innings via the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Mercy Rule on Friday.

Longtime rivals, Prestonsburg and Sheldon Clark are 15th Region foes. Hager guided Sheldon Clark to the 2015 15th Region All “A” Classic title.

Much-improved Prestonsburg claimed its ninth straight win, winning for the 12th time in 13 games.

On the mound, Prestonsburg pitcher Grant Martin earned the win. Martin, one of the 15th Region’s most underrated pitchers, worked four innings and earned the win.

Working out of a relief role, Nick Caudill kept Sheldon Clark scoreless in the game’s final inning.

Prestonsburg, which captured the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship earlier in the month, dominated throughout the non-district game.

Leading Prestonsburg at the plate, John Cooksey provided three hits and two RBIs. Cooksey delivered two doubles for the Blackcats.

Helping his pitching cause at the plate, Grant Martin added two doubles and game-high three RBIs.

Scott Stapleton provided three hits and one RBI for the Blackcats, who won for the third time since defeating Pikeville in the 15th Region All “A” Classic title game.

Also active at the plate, Reece Ison contributed two doubles and an RBI for the Blackcats.

Other offensive contributors for the Blackcats were Bryce Tucker (one double, two RBIs), Bailey Slone (one hit), Nick Rowe (one hit) and Ryne Slone (two walks).

Prestonsburg is scheduled to visit Sheldon Clark for a late-season game on May 6.
