RICHMOND – The Maroon team beat the White squad, 42-33, in the annual Maroon and White Game on Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium. Both sides of the ball showed excitement and made explosive plays that are sure to carry over into the fall.

The Maroon team, the defense, scored its points based on four points for a takeaway, two points for a defensive stop and three points for holding the offense to three downs and forcing a punt. The White team, the offense, scored points based on seven points for a touchdown and three points for a field goal.

Former Prestonsburg High School standout Byrosn Williams hauled in two receptions during the spring game.

Offensively, tight end Dan Paul, wide receiver Devin Borders and running back Kentayvus Hopkins caught passes for big gains. Running back Ethan Thomas had a 22-yard run. Hopkins’ 31-yard reception came on a drive that he capped off with a three-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He added an 11-yard scoring run in the third quarter. On the third play of the fourth quarter, Connecticut transfer Tim Boyle connected on a short pass over the middle to Paul who raced 75 yards for a touchdown. Borders began a late fourth quarter touchdown drive with a 35-yard catch. He finished it with a 12-yard scoring reception from Boyle.

Defensively, linemen Kagen Skidmore and Taquan Evans had two sacks each. Corey Glass and Jordan Whitfield each picked off a pass. Whitfield’s interception with about three minutes left in the game allowed the defense to secure the victory. Boyle threw for 139 yards and two touchdown passes. Bennie Coney added 66 yards passing in his one quarter of play. Hopkins ran 11 times for 41 yards and scored twice. Thomas picked up 31 yards on nine carries. Borders caught four passes for 72 yards. Torrod Carter caught a pair of passes.

Thomas Owens had a team-best eight tackles, including one for a loss. Glass had a tackle for a loss to go along with his interception.
