PRESTONSBURG – In a battle of former region baseball champions, Prestonsburg pulled away to beat Knott County Central 7-2 at StoneCrest on Monday night.

With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 13-2. The Blackcats returned to the win column following a loss to 15th Region rival Pike County Central over the weekend.

Knott County Central slipped to 12-5 with the loss. The Patriots dropped back into the loss column after notching back-to-back wins.

Prestonsburg, which captured the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship earlier in the month, took control of the game versus Knott County Central, a 14th Region title contender.

Prestonsburg pitcher Nick Caudill worked a complete game, allowing only five hits in seven innings. Caudill recorded eight strikeouts in the winning performance.

Helping to pace Prestonsburg offensively, Reece Ison belted a two-run homerun. Ison, who ranks as one of the 15th Region’s top baseball players, delivered three RBIs for the Blackcats.

Bailey Slone contributed a game-high three hits, including a triple. Slone provided two RBIs for the Blackcats.

Ryne Slone added two hits for Prestonsburg in the non-district win.

Bryce Tucker added a double and an RBI for the Blackcats, who remain ranked near the top in the 15th Region standings.

Scott Stapleton, continuing to be a leading player for the Prestonsburg baseball program, connected for one hit in the victory.

The Shawn Hager-coached Blackcats met Knott County Central for the first time in the 2016 season.
