PRESTONSBURG – On Saturday, area runners will have two 5k run/walk events to choose from. The Mountain Comprehensive Care Center Glow Run for Child Abuse Prevention and Pikeville Medical Center‘s Reclaim Your Life are both scheduled for Saturday.

Organizations are taking advantage on the fitness surge that has everyone from teenagers to grandmothers putting on the walking/running shoes. The state of Kentucky held 530 5K races in 2015. According to the website, there are approximately 53.2 million participants in the sport of running in the United States. The number of participants double to 116.7 million for the sport of walking. With this many individuals participating in both sports, its obvious running/walking shoes and fitness apparel is a lucrative business and can be a costly sport. The average pair of running shoes will set the participant back around $100.

The MCCC Glow Run plans to light up the night blue for Child Abuse Prevention. Glow sticks, along with necklaces and bracelets are suggested for the MCC Glow Run. The race will begin at the main stage in downtown Prestonsburg. Same day registration will begin around 5:30 p.m. Early registration forms can be picked up at Foxy Fitness, Fit-Tagious, Pro-Fitness or by calling Donnie Ray at 606-791-0195. Cost of the event at early registration is $20 and same day registration is $25. The entry fee for groups with eight or more participants is established at $15 per person.

The obesity epidemic continues to claim too many people. Registration for the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the race will start at 9 a.m. The race will begin and end on Main Street in Pikeville.
