Haywood to speak at chamber banquet

Coach Philip Haywood will serve as guest speaker during the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet in May.


PRESTONSBURG – Belfry High School football head coach Philip Haywood will serve as the guest speaker for the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards banquet and officer installation set to be held in the Wilkinson-Stumbo Convention Center at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24.

A Prestonsburg native, Haywood was recently named to the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame.

Haywood was one of seven individuals named to this year’s Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame class. He has coached 41 seasons and is the winningest coach in Kentucky high school football history with a 403-129 record.

Haywood has a 331-97 record with Belfry. He has guided the Pirates to five state championships. In 2015, Belfry blanked Lexington Catholic 43-0 in the Class 3A state title game.

In addition to his in-state honor, Haywood will also be inducted into the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame later in the year.

Chamber members and individuals from throughout Floyd County will be honored during the upcoming banquet.

The Big Sandy Singers and Band will provide entertainment during the event.
