PRESTONSBURG – Avenging a loss from earlier in the week behind a two-hitter from veteran pitcher Reece Ison, Prestonsburg outlasted visiting Allen Central 2-1 in eight innings in a key 58th District baseball game on Friday.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 15-7 overall and 3-1 in the 58th District.
Allen Central dropped to 14-8 overall and 5-1 in the district with the loss.
Ison earned the win for the Blackcats. The Prestonsburg pitcher limited Allen Central batters throughout the district matchup.
Allen Central pitcher Austin Lawson suffered the loss. Matt Combs relieved Lawson on the mound for the Rebels.
Several batters helped to pace the Blackcats at the plate.
Wesley Hager, Scott Stapleton, Reece Ison, Grant Martin, Ryne Slone, Bryce Tucker, John Cooksey and Bailey Slone delivered one hit apiece as part of Prestonsburg’s balanced offensive attack.
Martin and Slone provided one RBI apiece for the Blackcats.
Hager, one of the 15th Region’s most underrated baseball players, scored both of Prestonsburg’s runs in the district victory.
Much-improved Prestonsburg captured the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship in early-April. The Blackcats are under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hager, who guided Sheldon Clark to a 15th Region All “A” Classic title in his lone season with the Cardinals in 2015.
Prestonsburg was scheduled to wrap up the 58th District portion of its regular-season with back-to-back games against South Floyd this week.
The Rebels had defeated the Blackcats 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday, April 26.
Prestonsburg, Allen Central, Betsy Layne and South Floyd will come together to compete in the 58th District Baseball Tournament later in the month,
