DRIFT – Allen Central returned to the top on Wednesday, doubling up Prestonsburg 6-3 in the 58th District Tournament championship game at Drift Field.
The Rebels captured their first 58th District championship since 2010.
With the win, Allen Central improved to 19-11.
Prestonsburg dropped to 23-14 with the loss.
Both Allen Central and Prestonsburg advance to the 15th Region Baseball Tournament.
It was an extremely emotional victory for first-year Allen Central head coach Jeff Aldrich and his players.
“This was a complete and total team effort,” said Aldrich. “Both teams fought hard. Cameron Blevins had another great night at the plate. The fans were Awesome on both sides. This was for my son, who would be graduating with my seniors. Trey Aldrich, number fifteen, fly high baby boy! Daddy will love you always and forever! Trey passed away on August 5, 2014. Baseball was his life.”
Allen Central starting pitcher Austin Lawson claimed the win. Lawson was named the district tournament’s most valuable player.
Allen Central reliever Steven Howard posted the save.
Prestonsburg pitcher Nick Caudill suffered the loss.
The Rebels and Blackcats plated two runs apiece in the first inning. Allen Central, however, managed to tighten up defensively. The Rebels outscored Prestonsburg 4-1 after the opening inning.
Cameron Blevins led the Allen Central offensive effort. Howard, Jeffrey Samons, Seth Hall, Wyatt Crisp, Dustin Johnson, Kane Taylor, Cameron Nelson and Rico Dominguez also contributed at the plate for the Rebels.
The 15th Region Baseball Tournament will be held at Shelby Valley High School next week.
