ROBINSON CREEK – Each 58th District representative suffered an opening round loss in the 15th Region Baseball Tournament at Shelby Valley on Monday.
In the opening game of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament, 59th District runner-up Shelby Valley pulled away to beat 58th District champion Allen Central 9-5. With the loss, Allen Central ended its season 19-12.
Johnson Central, the champion out of the 57th District, blanked 60th District runner-up Pike County Central 10-0 in the second game of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament.
In the tightest game during the first round of the region tournament, reigning region champion and 60th District champ Lawrence County edged 58th District runner-up Prestonsburg 7-6. The loss forced the Blackcats to exit the season with a 23-15 record.
Remaining in the win column, 59th District champion Pikeville doubled up 57th District second-place finisher Sheldon Clark 8-4 in the final first round game of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament.
Longtime powerhouse Johnson Central continued to roll in the semifinals of the region tournament on Tuesday, toppling Shelby Valley 18-2 in five innings. With the win, Johnson Central advanced to the region title game.
Joining Johnson Central in the region championship game, Lawrence County defeated Pikeville 3-1 in the nightcap of the semifinal round on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs met in the region championship game on Wednesday night. The title tilt featured plenty of early scoring along with a lightning delay. In the end, Johnson Central pulled away to win 12-2 in five innings.
Thanks to the win, Johnson Central improved to 32-9 and advances to the KHSAA state tournament.
