ROBINSON CREEK – Floyd County teams were eliminated from the 15th Region Softball Tournament at Shelby Valley earlier in the week. Both 58th District champion Betsy Layne and 58th District runner-up South Floyd fell in the region tournament’s opening round on Monday.
In the first round of the 15th Region Softball Tournament it was Magoffin County 10, Pikeville 8; Belfry 11, Betsy Layne 0 in five innings; Johnson Central 10, East Ridge 0 in five innings and Lawrence County 10, South Floyd 6 in five innings.
Betsy Layne ended its season 7-15.
South Floyd concluded its campaign 11-15.
Longtime 57th District rivals Magoffin County and Johnson Central prevailed in the semifinals on Tuesday night. Preseason favorite Magoffin County outlasted Belfry 3-2.
Punching its ticket for the title game and also pulling out a hard-fought victory, reigning 15th Region champion Johnson Central edged Lawrence County 2-1 in the nightcap on Tuesday night.
Johnson Central and Magoffin County were scheduled to meet in the 15th Region championship game on Thursday night. Results from the 15th Region title matchup were unavailable at press time.
Johnson Central captured the 15th Region baseball title on Wednesday night, defeating former 57th District counterpart Lawrence County 12-2 in five innings.
