PRESTONSBURG – Multiple members of the Prestonsburg High School baseball program are taking the field for various travel teams.

Scott Stapleton is the Blackcat playing closest to home. Stapleton is suiting up for Post 76 out of Ashland.

Former Major League Baseball player Johnnie LeMaster is on the Post 76 coaching staff. LeMaster, a Paintsville native who was the starting shortstop for the San Francisco Giants in the late-1970s and early 1980s, guided the Ashland Blazer baseball squad to a runner-up finish in the neighboring 16th Region last week. LeMaster played 12 seasons with four teams during his Major League Baseball career. He spent 12 seasons with the Giants.

Reece Ison is another Blackcat taking the field close to home. Ison is playing for the Huntington Hounds.

Blackcat Bryce Tucker is playing for a team based out of South Carolina.

Under the direction of first-year head coach Shawn Hager, Prestonsburg concluded the 2016 season 23-15. Hager guided the Blackcats to a 15th Region All “A” Classic championship and a runner-up finish in the 58th District.

Lawrence County edged Prestonsburg 7-6 in the first round of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament, eliminating the Blackcats from the postseason.
