PRESTONSBURG – The Prestonsburg football program will host a four-team preseason scrimmage at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 12. In addition to Prestonsburg, Powell County and Knott County Central will compete in the preseason event. Prestonsburg is still working to finalize a fourth team for the scrimmage, which will get underway at 6 p.m.
Veteran Prestonsburg head coach John DeRossett and members of his coaching staff will welcome players to preseason practice at the conclusion of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Dead Period in July.
Prestonsburg concluded the 2015 season 5-6. The Blackcats fell to Lexington Christian in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.
Prestonsburg didn’t face neither Powell County nor Knott County Central in 2015.
Powell County concluded the 2015 season 8-4 following a loss to former state powerhouse Bell County in the second round of the Class 3A State Playoffs. The Pirates showed much improvement after ended the 2014 season 3-7.
Brandon Brewer replaced Prestonsburg product Tony Burchett as Powell County head coach after the 2014 season. The Powell County football program enjoyed growth throughout Burchett’s tenure as head coach.
Knott County Central was also a much-improved unit in 2015, finishing 4-7 under the direction of first-year head coach Jon Chapman. The Patriots lost to another former state powerhouse – Corbin – in the opening round of the Class 3A State Playoffs.
High school football teams from across the state will kick off their 2016 seasons in August.
