PRESTONSBURG – The Prestonsburg Blackcats are close to returning to the gridiron. Physicals for the Prestonsburg football program are set for Sunday. The Blackcats will begin preseason practice at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
According to Coach John DeRossett, Prestonsburg will conduct practice each weekday at 5:30 p.m. until school starts in August.
The Blackcats are scheduled to pass with longtime rival Paintsville on Wednesday. Led by eventual Mr. Football Kash Daniel, Paintsville reached the Class A State Semifinals in 2015.
Prestonsburg is scheduled to travel to Raceland for the Rams’ annual passing tournament Friday, July 15-Saturday, July 16.
The Blackcats are slated to visit Russell for another two-day passing tournament July 22-23.
Prestonsburg concluded the 2015 season 5-6. After opening the 2015 season with a loss to Pikeville, Prestonsburg posted back-to-back wins over Sheldon Clark and Breathitt County. Prestonsburg, however, dropped two straight games to Hazard and Shelby Valley.
The second half of the Blackcats’ 2015 season included Class 2A, District 8 wins over East Ridge, Allen Central and Betsy Layne. Prestonsburg lost games to Leslie County and Lawrence County during the second half of the 2015 season, a campaign in which the Blackcats managed to outscore opponents 285-201.
The Blackcats’ 2015 season concluded following a loss to Lexington Christian in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.
