RUSSELL – Prestonsburg had compiled a 5-1 record in a passing tournament at Russell when the event was canceled due to the heat index on Saturday.

The Blackcats, under the direction of veteran head coach John DeRossett and his staff, started Saturday 2-0.

A member of Class 2A, District 8, Prestonsburg was competing in a passing tournament for the second straight weekend. The Blackcats had competed in passing tournaments at Raceland the weekend earlier, finishing runner-up on Friday, July 15.

Prestonsburg resumed preseason practice on Monday. The Blackcats are less than one month away from kicking off the 2016 season on the road at Pikeville.

Prestonsburg will host its annual media day at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.

The Blackcats exited the 2015 season with a 5-6record . After opening the 2015 season with a loss to Pikeville, Prestonsburg posted back-to-back wins over Sheldon Clark and Breathitt County. Prestonsburg, however, dropped two straight games to Hazard and Shelby Valley.

During the second half of the 2015 season, Prestonsburg notched wins over East Ridge, Allen Central and Betsy Layne. Prestonsburg lost games to Leslie County and Lawrence County after the midway point of the 2015 season, a campaign in which the Blackcats managed to outscore opponents 285-201.

The Blackcats’ 2015 season ended after a loss to Lexington Christian in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.

Prestonsburg will visit non-district nemesis Pikeville for its 2016 season opener on Aug. 19. Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Pikeville game is set for 7:30 p.m.
