Prestonsburg volleyball team returns to court

PRESTONSBURG – The Prestonsburg High School volleyball team, under the direction of head coach Kristal Allen, opened preseason practice on Monday. The Lady Blackcats are scheduled to compete in the Bluegrass State Games later in the month.

A former University of Pikeville volleyball player, Allen guided the Lady Blackcats to an 8-17 record in 2014, her first campaign as head coach. The Lady Blackcats fell to 15th Region powerhouse Allen Central in the first round of the 58th District Volleyball Tournament at South Floyd’s Raider Arena. One of the state’s top high school volleyball program’s, Allen Central has captured four straight 15th Region championships.

Allen took over for former Prestonsburg head coach Jonni Raines. Making strides in Allen’s first season on the sidelines, Prestonsburg showed much improvement after posting a 4-17 record in 2013.

Prior to playing for the University of Pikeville, Allen starred at Betsy Layne High School.

Competing in this year’s Bluegrass State Games will afford Prestonsburg an opportunity to face some of the state’s top high school volleyball squads.

Prestonsburg, Allen Central, South Floyd and Betsy Layne make up the 58th District. The rest of the 15th Region includes Johnson Central, Magoffin County, Paintsville, Sheldon Clark, East Ridge, Piarist School, Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Belfry, Lawrence County, Phelps and Pike County Central.
