EASTERN – Allen Central is headed into its final football season. The Rebels started preseason practice earlier in the month, following the conclusion of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s annual mandatory dead period. Allen Central will visit Class 2A, District 8 rival Betsy Layne for a four-team scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 12.
A longtime Class A member before moving up a class, Allen Central faced Floyd County foes Betsy Layne, Prestonsburg and South Floyd during the 2015 season.
Allen Central, host Betsy Layne Breathitt County and Pike County Central are slated to take to the Bobcats’ home field for the preseason high school football event.
The Betsy Layne-hosted scrimmage is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
Allen Central ended the 2015 season 5-5. The Rebels will visit Phelps for a 2016 season-opener on Aug. 19. Former University of Kentucky football player David Jones is preparing to enter his first season as the Hornets’ head coach. Jones had previously been an assistant coach on the Belfry football team’s coaching staff.
After its season-opener and following an open date, Allen Central will remain on the road for a second straight game, visiting Morgan County on Sept. 2. The Rebels are slated to host Jenkins for a home opener on Sept. 9. Veteran head coach Jeremy Hall guides the Rebels.
Allen Central and South Floyd high schools are scheduled to consolidate to form Floyd County Central High School.
