ASHLAND – The Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its sixth tournament of the 2016 season on the Ohio River in Ashland on Sunday. A total of 24 anglers competed in the event. Brandon Staten, a longtime angler, won the tournament.
The Ohio River was in excellent shape for the tournament. The water was about one to two feet below normal elevation with stained water and a slow current.
Weather for the tournament was solid with sunny skies, light winds and an air temperature around 90 degrees.
The fishing was tough at times, reports all summer said the fishing was slow and that proved to be true. Keepers were hard to come by throughout the tournament.
The main pattern for the tournament was to fish top water in the morning then switch to soft plastic lures and crankbaits fished around any hard cover, wood or rocks in one to six feet of water on the main river. Lures that imitated bait fish were the top producers.
The top finishers are as follows: 1st – Brandon Staten (5 fish), 6.58 lbs.; 2nd — MO (5 fish) 5.06 lbs.; 3rd — Mike Patrick (4 fish), 4.23 lbs.; 4th — John Newman (2 fish), 3.14 lbs.; 5th — Lynn Fields (3 fish), 3.12 lbs.; 6th — Bryan Fields (2 fish), 3.08 lbs.; 7th — Don Taylor (1 fish), 2.44 lbs.; 8th — Kevin Runyon (2 fish), 2.08 lbs.; 9th — Keith Pacific (2 fish), 2.07 lbs.; 10th — Cody Justice (2 fish), 2.06 lbs.
