EASTERN – One of the top all-time baseball coaches in the neighboring 14th Region is poised to coach a 15th Region squad. Former Knott County Central High School coach Gary Hammonds has been tabbed to guide the Allen Central High School baseball program.

In his latest coaching stint, Hammonds guided the June Buchanan School baseball team. He has mentored young baseball players throughout Eastern Kentucky.

BJ Aldrich spent one season at the helm of the Allen Central baseball program, guiding the Rebels to a 58th District championship. The Rebels, following a loss to Shelby Valley in the first round of the 15th Region Baseball Tournament, concluded the 2016 season with a 19-12 overall record.

Hammonds will be able to put together some of Allen Central’s schedule for the 2017 season, its final campaign. Allen Central and South Floyd high schools are on track to consolidate to form Floyd County Central High School.

Currently, Allen Central, South Floyd, Prestonsburg and Betsy Layne make up the 58th District/Floyd County Conference.
