PHELPS – Allen Central prevented host Phelps from prevailing in a debut on its home field, pulling away to win 28-8 on Friday night.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Jeremy Hall-coached Allen Central scored three touchdowns in the second period. The Rebels, faring well offensively after experiencing a slow start, led 20-0 at halftime.
Allen Central owned a 28-0 lead before Phelps, under the direction of former University of Kentucky football player David Jones, arrived on the scoreboard in the final quarter.
Leading the Rebels to the win, senior running back Jesse Brown rushed six times for 60 yards and two two touchdowns.
Allen Central quarterback Dylan Caudill was nearly perfect throwing the football, completing seven of eight passes for 72 yards and one touchdown. Allen May was on the receiving end of Caudill’s scoring toss in the season opener.
Josh Whitaker, Cameron Evans and Steven Howard helped to lead the Allen Central rushing attack in the non-district matchup between two former district rivals.
Defensively, Allen Central limited Phelps throughout the season opener. Chase Caudill and Josh King paced the Allen Central defense with eight tackles apiece. Howard delivered seven tackles while May and Evans added five stops apiece for the Rebels in the victory.
Caudill, excelling both offensively and defensively, recorded an interception and returned it 37 yards as part of Allen Central’s impressive season-opening triumph.
Phelps’ lone touchdown came on a scoring pass from Garrett Clevinger to Christian Mounts.
Allen Central has Friday, Aug. 26 as the open date on its schedule.
