Paisley Akers: Three-time gold medal gymnast

PRESTONSBURG – Gymnast Paisley Akers recently competed in the 50th AAU Junior Olympic Games held in Houston. As a Kentucky state champion, Akers qualified to compete in all four events at the national level. She is coached by Henry Young from American Tumbling and Trampoline Academy (ATTA) of Allen. By the end of the 50th AAU Junior Olympic Games, Akers had captured three goal medals.

Preliminaries for the four-day event began on July 27. Competing against gymnasts from throughout the country, Akers reached the finals in all events and finished the competition with gold medals in trampoline, double mini trampoline and tumbling events. She placed fourth in the mini trampoline event. During closing ceremonies of the 50th AAU Junior Olympics on July 31, Akers was recognized for being a two-year member of the AAU Stars of Tomorrow National Team. She was presented with four AAU association awards for overall high scores among all age groups.

Akers is in the fourth grade at Prestonsburg Elementary School. She is the daughter of Brandon and Valerie Akers of Prestonsburg. Her grandparents are Carson and Sharon Akers of McDowell and Janet and late Chad Vance of Hit Hat.
