Prestonsburg outlasts visiting East Carter, 1-0

PRESTONSBURG – Reigning 15th Region All “A” Classic champion Prestonsburg edged visiting East Carter 1-0 in a girls’ high school soccer game at StoneCrest on Monday night.

Familiar foes, Prestonsburg and East Carter are rivals from neighboring regions.

With the win, Prestonsburg moved to 11-0-2.

East Carter slipped to 5-5 with the loss.

Freshman forward Elizabeth Burchett netted the game’s only goal to give Prestonsburg the victory.

Defensively for Prestonsburg, junior goalkeeper Hannah Stratton held East Carter scoreless to record a shutout.

Through 13 games, Paul Burchett-coached Prestonsburg has outscored opponents 54-7.

Prestonsburg was hosting Sheldon Clark for a 57th District match at press time on Thursday. Results from the Prestonsburg-Sheldon Clark girls’ soccer match were unavailable at press time and will appear in next week’s edition.

Prestonsburg is slated to meet Owensboro Catholic in the All “A” Classic State Tournament at 11 a.m. in Frankfort on Saturday morning. In addition to Prestonsburg and Owensboro Catholic, Bethlehem, Murray, Newport Central Catholic, Louisville Collegiate, Holy Cross (Louisville), Lexington Christian and Middlesboro are set to compete in the statewide girls’ soccer event.

Prestonsburg’s remaining regular season schedule will include games versus 14th Region title contenders Letcher County Central, Breathitt County, Hazard and Perry County Central. The Lady Blackcats’ regular season finale is set for Oct. 6 on the road at Perry County Central.

Prestonsburg remains atop the 15th Region girls’ soccer standings. The Lady Blackcats will compete in the 57th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament in October.
