Bobcats fall to preseason favorite Leslie County

BETSY LAYNE – Host Betsy Layne struggled to keep up with preseason Class 2A, District 8 favorite Leslie County in its latest outing. Visiting Leslie County pulled away to beat the Bobcats 56-16 in a Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday night.

The matchup served as a district opener for both teams.

With the win, Leslie County improved to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in Class 2A, District 8.

Betsy Layne dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the district with the loss.

Leading Leslie County to the win, quarterback Darron Whitaker completed four of four passes for 104 yards and three touchdowns.

Dylan Adams, Nick Hoskins and Seth Melton hauled in one touchdown pass reception apiece for the Eagles in the victory.

Pacing Leslie County on the ground, Lucas Vance rushed three times for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyler Smith and Luke Lewis rushed for one touchdown apiece as Leslie County won convincingly.

The Betsy Layne offensive attack was limited throughout the game.

Logan Layne led Betsy Layne, rushing eight times for 71 yards and one touchdown.

Finishing second to Layne in the Bobcat rushing column, Corey Bias rushed nine times for 50 yards and one score.

Betsy Layne quarterback Jordan Kendrick completed 6-of-10 passes for 35 yards. Kendrick was the only other Betsy Layne player to carry the football, rushing five times for 23 yards.

Jeremiah Keathley led the Betsy Layne defensive effort with a team-high eight tackles.

Behind behind Keathley in the defensive category for the Bobcats, Layne and Bias added seven tackles apiece.

Betsy Layne is scheduled to host Shelby Valley for another Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff for the Betsy Layne-Shelby Valley game is set for 7:30 p.m.
