ROBINSON CREEK – Prestonsburg claimed a Class 2A, District 8 win on the road on Friday night, doubling up host Shelby Valley 56-28.

The game served as a season opener for each Class 2A, District squad.

With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in Class 2A, District 8.

Shelby Valley slipped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the district with the loss.

The Blackcats thrived on offense, defense and special teams.

Prestonsburg Coach John DeRossett was quick to compliment his team on its performance in the district matchup.

“We played a sound game in all areas,” DeRossett commented. “We created turnovers and that helped a bunch. The punt block for the touchdown was a big play. We watched the video and will continue to improve. Our players want to get better each week and that is big. This team is still learning and many of the young players are starting to make plays they did not make earlier in the season. Now they are all district games so our margin for error decreases.”

Leading Prestonsburg to the win, Wesley Hager rushed 16 times for 142 yards and four touchdowns.

Prestonsburg featured a pair of rushers with over 100 yards. Another Prestonsburg back, Ryne Slone, rushed seven times for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Bailey McCoy ranked as Prestonsburg’s third-leading rusher, gaining 61 yards and scoring one touchdown via six carries. Ethan Varney added 46 rushing yards on nine carries for the Blackcats.

Defensively for Prestonsburg, Dylan Kidd posted a game-high 13 tackles. Following Kidd in the Prestonsburg defensive category, McCoy and Bailey Slone delivered 11 tackles apiece.

Varney recorded nine tackles for the visiting Blackcats.

Prestonsburg is scheduled to visit East Ridge for another Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 30. Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-East Ridge football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Lick Creek.
