PRESTONSBURG – Five days after falling to Third Region powerhouse Owensboro Catholic in the All “A” Classic Girls’ Soccer State Tournament, Prestonsburg notched a shutout win over a contender from the neighboring 14th Region. Prestonsburg blanked visiting Letcher County Central 7-0 on Thursday night.
Familiar foes, Prestonsburg and Letcher County Central met for the first time in the 2016 season.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 13-1-2.
Letcher County Central slipped to 9-5-1 with the loss.
Leading the Lady Blackcats to the victory, Elizabeth Burchett scored four goals and distributed one assist.
Accompanying Burchett in the Prestonsburg scoring column, Christin Mitchell, Makayla Ousley and Cassandra Richie netted one goal apiece for the Lady Blackcats.
Prestonsburg, under the direction of head coach Paul Burchett, excelled offensively thanks in part to a balanced effort.
Ousley and Jillian Kidd chipped in one assist apiece as Prestonsburg prevailed in the non-district match.
The Lady Blackcats thrived defensively as well.
Defensively for the Lady Blackcats, goalkeepers Hannah Stratton and Chelsea Salmons combined to hold Letcher County Central scoreless.
Letcher County Central struggled both offensively and defensively throughout the contest. Defensively for the Lady Cougars, goalkeeper Sara Coots allowed seven goals.
Prestonsburg remains on top in the 15th Region girls’ soccer standings.
