LICK CREEK – Prestonsburg remained in the win column on the road in neighboring Pike County on Friday night, pummelling host East Ridge 48-8 in a Class 2A, District 8 game.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Class 2A, District 8.
East Ridge dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the district with the loss.
Prestonsburg took control of the district matchup shortly after opening kickoff and never allowed East Ridge to get comfortable on its home field.
“We played a sound game,” Prestonsburg Coach John DeRossett commented following his team’s district victory. “We returned a punt for a touchdown, which always helps. We are getting better each week we play, which is what we want to see. These guys have worked hard to get to this point but we can’t look back we must continue to work hard each day. I love this team and staff. They are a bunch of grinders who have great loyalty to their community, school and teammates. These players love their teammates, have a passion for the game and have a will to win.”
Thriving on the ground, Prestonsburg rushed for 358 yards. Ethan Varney ranked as Prestonsburg’s top ground-gainer, rushing six times for 178 yards and one touchdown.
Quarterback Wes Hager rushed six times for 91 yards and three touchdowns in the Blackcats’ win.
Contributing to Prestonsburg’s stout rushing attack, Bailey McCoy took six carries for 61 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively for the Blackcats, Dylan Kidd and Matt Smith recorded six tackles apiece.
Shortly after beating East Ridge convincingly, Prestonsburg turned its focus to Leslie County. The Blackcats will visit Leslie County for a key Class 2A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 7.
