PRESTONSBURG – Despite tying Cumberland (Tenn.) for first place in the UPIKE Fall Inviational at StoneCrestGolf Course, the University of Pikeville Bears lost the tiebreaker due to a mid-round withdrawal at the No. 5 seed. Tournament protocol called for a tie to be broken by the fifth player’s score.
Without a fifth, UPIKE conceded the loss as Cumberland’s fifth scorer, Jacob Nolen, shot 166 (85-81) for the tournament.
It was still a strong showing for the Bears as they were led by Roger Maynard in second place overall with a score of 144 (73-71) and Burgess Clark in third place after carding a 146 (74-72).
While UPIKE (299-297) and Cumberland (291-305) tied on the team leaderboard with 596’s, Midway rounded out the top three with a 613 (304-309).
Cumberland’s Garrett Daniel was the individual medalist with a score of 140, shooting a pair of 70’s in each round.
UPIKE’s Tyler Smith made it into the top 10 as well, tying for seventh place with a 153 (76-77) and Trey Isenberg closed out the Bears’ scoring in 11th place with a 155 (78-77).
Clark had a strong tournament statistically, shooting two-under par on par-three holes and carding one of four eagles at the event. Isenberg stood out as well, shooting three under on par fives.
UPIKE will wrap up its fall season Oct. 16-17 at the Shawnee State Invitational in McDermott, Ohio at the Elks Country Club.
