FLOYD COUNTY – The Prestonsburg Blackcats are set to visit the Leslie County Eagles for a key Class 2A, District 8 football game.
Leslie County is ranked 10th in the latest Kentucky Associated Press Class 2A High School Football Poll.
Through six games, Leslie County (5-1 overall, 2-0 Class 2A, District 8) has outscored opponents 193-59. Leslie County boasts one of the best defensive units in Class 2A. The Eagles have held three of their six opponents to eight points or less, posting two shutouts.
Offensively, Seth Melton leads Leslie County in both rushing and passing. Melton has rushed 64 times for 437 yards and four touchdowns. The productive Melton, who started the season at quarterback for the Eagles, has completed 30-of-50 passes for 422 yards and four TDs.
Lucas Vance ranks as Leslie County’s second-leading rusher. Vance has rushed 27 times for 315 yards and two touchdowns.
Taten Smith has rushed 49 times for 271 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles.
Leslie County quarterback Darron Whitaker has completed 19-of-30 passes for 316 yards and five touchdowns.
Tyler Dixon leads Leslie County in receiving. Dixon has reeled in 12 receptions for 181 yards and three touchdowns.
Lucas Vance (seven catches, 143 yards, two touchdowns) and Nick Hoskins (seven catches, 101 yards, one touchdown) are other reliable receivers for the Eagles.
Prestonsburg is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Class 2A, District 8. The Blackcats, thanks in part to an outstanding rushing attack, have outscored opponents 218-145.
As a team, Prestonsburg has rushed for 1,974 yards. Prestonsburg features two backs on pace to rush for over 1,000 yards in the 2016 season. Leading the Blackcats on the ground, quarterback Wesley Hager has rushed 92 times for 759 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Running back Ethan Varney has rushed 47 times for 604 yards and six touchdowns for the Blackcats.
Prestonsburg has posted district wins over Shelby Valley and East Ridge and notched non-district victories in games against Sheldon Clark and Pikeville. The Blackcats have dropped non-district contests to defending Class 1A state champion Pikeville and Hazard.

Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Leslie County football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Hyden.
In another game involving a Floyd County high school football game, South Floyd will entertain Jenkins in a non-district matchup.
Both South Floyd and Jenkins are winless.
The Raiders have dropped games to Betsy Layne, Harlan, Knott County Central, Allen Central, Pikeville and Twin Valley, Va.
McCreary Central, Allen Central, Lynn Camp, Hazard, Phelps and Ridgeview, Va. have posted wins over the Cavaliers.
Kickoff for the South Floyd-Jenkins football game is set for 7 p.m. in Hi Hat.
