HI HAT – Kelsey Tackett is the new head coach of the South Floyd High School volleyball program. Tackett replaced longtime South Floyd head coach Keith Smallwood.
“I am very excited to be named head coach of the South Floyd volleyball team,” Tackett said. “I also am excited to work with assistant coach Scott Shannon. We have been hitting the gym hard with practices and conditioning as we’re working to step up during this year of growth. Last year, we graduated five seniors, so we have a lot of younger girls who are stepping up this year.”
Several young players will have to step up early for the Lady Raiders.
“We have 11 returning players,” Tackett confided. “Laken Springer is our only senior. Cheyanne Light, Jesse Tackett and Kailey Shannon are our three juniors; Johnna Preston, Sarah Akers, Emilee Little and Emily Shelton are our four sophomores and Alexis Daniels, Amber Stumbo and Jasmine Spriggs are all middle school players.”
The new head coach continues to see an interest in the South Floyd volleyball program.
“This year’s team is growing,” Tackett added. “Our numbers might seem low but we are a very strong and competitive as a team. Most of these girls I coached as middle schoolers, so I feel very confident that they will do well during this season.”
South Floyd accompanies county rivals Allen Central, Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg in the 58th District. The Lady Raiders will compete in the Bluegrass State Games at the Kentucky Basketball Academy July 31-Aug. 2.
South Floyd will open the 2015 season in August.
