HAZARD – The Prestonsburg and Perry County Central girls’ soccer teams, rivals from neighboring regions, battled to a 1-1 tie on Thursday, Oct. 6.
With the tie, Prestonsburg, a squad under the direction of head coach Paul Burchett, exited the regular season with a 15-1-3 overall record.
Perry County Central moved to 14-5-1 following the tie.
Prior to tying with Perry County Central, Prestonsburg had posted back-to-back-to-back wins.
Freshman Elizabeth Burchett scored Prestonsburg’s goal off an assist from senior Cassandra Richie.
Prestonsburg held Perry County Central scoreless until the game’s final minute. Senior Whitley Gordon scored Perry County Central’s goal. Perry County Central tied the score at 1-1 with 16 seconds left in the game when Gordon put a free kick from 20 yards out into the upper right hand corner of the goal.
Defensively for Prestonsburg, goalkeeper Hannah Stratton, a junior, held Perry County Central to one goal.
Through 19 regular season games, Prestonsburg outscored opponents 79-13.
Perry County Central goalkeeper Keisha Couch, a senior, limited Prestonsburg to one goal.
