PIKEVILLE – The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the Mid-South Conference regular-season standings according to a vote of the league’s coaches released on Wednesday.
UPIKE is coming off its best season in program history, finishing with a 26-9 overall record and the team’s first trip to the NAIA Fab Four. Still, the MSC is a beast of its own as the Bears tallied a 7-7 league record last season and had two other teams – Lindsey Wilson College and Campbellsville University – finish one-win shy of the semifinals themselves.
That balance at the end of last season shows in Wednesday’s poll as Lindsey Wilson College is the league favorite with 47 points and six of the eight available first-place votes. Campbellsville University is second with 38 points and a first place vote and Shawnee State (Ohio) rounds out the top three with 36 points and the remaining top nod.
The Bears fell just short of the top three with 33 points, followed by Cumberland (Tenn.) with 30, Cumberlands with 17, Georgetown collecting 16 and newcomer Life (Ga.) getting seven points.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams in the poll.
UPIKE is scheduled to open the 2016-17 season on Nov. 1 against Milligan at the East Kentucky Expo Center. Prior to that, the Bears will host the annual Basketball Blast-Off at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 in UPIKE Gym.
