PAINTSVILLE – After compiling the 15th Region’s best record during the regular season, Prestonsburg fell short against Johnson Central in the 57th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament title game. Tournament host Johnson Central, competing on its home field, outlasted the Lady Blackcats 2-1 in the 57th District championship game at Eagle Field on Thursday evening.
Prestonsburg dropped to 16-2-3 with the loss.
With the win, Johnson Central improved to 14-7-0.
Both Johnson Central and Prestonsburg advanced to the 15th Region Girls’ Soccer Tournament at Shelby Valley High School in Pike County.
Junior forward/midfielder Molly Davis led Johnson Central to the win. Davis, excelling throughout the postseason match, scored both of the Lady Eagles’ goals in the district championship-clinching victory.
Junior Bekah Preston and sophomore Lauren Preston chipped in one assist apiece for tournament host Johnson Central in the win.
Defensively for the Lady Eagles, goalkeeper Alyssa Pack, a sophomore, allowed only one goal.
Freshman forward Elizabeth Burchett, one of the state’s top young girls’ high school soccer players, scored Prestonsburg’s lone goal in the loss.
Defensively for the Lady Blackcats, goalkeeper Hannah Stratton, a junior, allowed two goals.
Four teams made up the field for the 15th Region Girls’ Soccer Tournament at the start of the week. In addition to Prestonsburg and Johnson Central, Lawrence County and Pikeville advanced to the 15th Region Girls’ Soccer Tournament.
