ASHLAND – Ashland Paul Blazer High School announced the hiring of former Major Leaguer Johnnie LeMaster as its new baseball head coach on Thursday.

“We are excited for the future of Tomcat baseball under Coach LeMaster’s leadership and believe his wealth of knowledge from his playing days along with his experience as a college head coach will serve him incredibly well as our head coach,” the school said in a press release.

LeMaster has coached for many years in the Little League, junior league and senior league divisions. He has also been the head coach at Pikeville College (UPIKE) and served as the manager of the Kentucky Longrifles, a former Minor League team.

LeMaster takes over for Jeffrey Wilcox, who didn’t have his contract renewed for the 2015-16 schoolyear. Wilcox coached the Ashland baseball program for 17 seasons. He helped lead the Tomcats to three state tournament appearances (2004, 2012, 2013).

Earlier in the week, LeMaster guided the Paintsville Little League 11-12-year-old all-star team in the state title game.
