BETSY LAYNE – The Betsy Layne High School boys’ basketball program must replace all five starters from its 2014-15 team. Under the direction of second-year head coach Gary Keathley, Betsy Layne attended camps at Morehead State University and Berea College earlier in the offseason.
Despite the current team’s inexperience, Keathley remains upbeat about his squad.
“The summer went good – we’re just really young and trying to rebuild after losing all five starters,” Keathley confided.
The Bobcats compiled a 21-8 record in Keathley’s first season as head coach following a lengthy stint as an assistant coach.
Allen Central upset Betsy Layne in the first round of last season’s 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, winning 48-45 at South Floyd High School’s Raider Arena. The loss to Allen Central eliminated the Bobcats from the postseason.
Betsy Layne lost three double figure scorers – Peyton Case (21.5 ppg), Lako Daniels (13.7 ppg) and Dustin Rogers (13.0 ppg) – to graduation. Additional starters lost via graduation were Dalton Maldonado (7.9 ppg) and McKenzie Akers (2.8 ppg).
The Bobcats will begin preseason practice in mid-October.
Betsy Layne is scheduled to visit familiar 15th Region foe Pike County Central for a season-opener on Dec. 1.
