PRESTONSBURG – Prestonsburg football coaches and players greeted fans and members of the media during Prestonsburg High School Fall Sports Media Day at Josh Francis Field/Blackcat Stadium on Saturday. The Prestonsburg preseason event also featured the Adams Middle School football team and AMS cheerleaders and Prestonsburg cheerleading, dance and girls’ soccer squads. In less than two weeks, Prestonsburg will visit Letcher County Central for a preseason game. The Blackcats will venture to Letcher County Central for a scrimmage on Aug. 14.

Prestonsburg ended the 2014 season 10-3 following a loss to district rival Shelby Valley in the Class 2A, Region 4 championship game. The John DeRossett-coached Blackcats are scheduled to host longtime rival Pikeville for a season-opener on Aug. 21. Former Blackcat Chatlin Jarrell is playing for Pikeville after transferring from Prestonsburg.

Prestonsburg faces the challenge of replacing talented quarterback Jarredd Jarrell, among others. Two quarterbacks – sophomore Drake Nunnery and junior Bailey Slone – have been taking snaps for the Blackcats in the preseason.

Senior Dalton Frasure is the top returning back for the Blackcats. Frasure committed to Austin Peay State University earlier in the summer.

Letcher County Central concluded the 2014 season 9-3 after falling to eventual state champion Pulaski County in the second round of the Class 5A State Playoffs. The Cougars are scheduled to host Pike County Central in a season-opener on Aug. 21.

Former Breathitt County head coach Mike Holcomb guides Letcher Central, which returns talented senior tailback Jaylyn Williams, among others.
