LEXINGTON – The Allen Central High School volleyball program thrived in the Bluegrass State Games over the weekend.
The Allen Central varsity team finished third overall in the Championship Division of the Bluegrass State Games, which featured 140 varsity teams. The Allen Central junior varsity squad finished as the champion of the Second Flight in the JV Division.
After winning its pool, Allen Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, defeated Beechwood and Daviess County in the championship division of the varsity tournament. The Rebels, however, dropped a match to Northern Kentucky high school volleyball powerhouse Ryle in the varsity tournament. Still, Allen Central pushed Ryle for the win.
The Allen Central junior varsity team defeated Dunbar, Daviess County and Southwestern en route to the JV championship.
“It’s a great day to be an Allen Central Rebel,” Maynard said. “I’m extremely proud of their hard work, determination and dedication. Getting out of the gym at 9 p.m,, eating, then in their rooms by 11 p.m., and lights out by midnight, then back up at 6 a.m. and playing the first match at 8 a.m. takes a special kind of love for the game. I was told by a couple of Lexington coaches that we did fantastic and our stock rose significantly with our showing and the way we played at the Bluegrass State Games. I am like a proud parent of these girls. They did above and beyond what was expected.”
Allen Central has captured four straight 15th Region championships. The Rebels are scheduled to visit 15th Region foe Phelps for a season-opener on Aug. 18.
