BETSY LAYNE – Allen Central beat Betsy Layne, the host of the 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, 44-40 in a first round game at the Dome on Monday night.

With the win, Allen Central improved to 14-17 and advances to the district championship game on Friday night.

Betsy Layne ended its season 7-23 with the loss.

Allen Central’s Cameron Nelson led all scorers with a game-high 14 points. Dylan Caudill, who also reached double figures for the Rebels, scored eight of his 10 points in the first half to help Allen Central build an early lead.

Allen May finished with nine points and Kolby Slone scored seven points in the final quarter to help the Rebels hold on for the win.

Betsy Layne fell behind 10-2 in the fist quarter. The Bobcats, however, pulled to within five points prior to halftime after Zach Bentley hit two 3-pointers in the second quarter. Bentley scored 11 points for Betsy Layne in the season-ending loss.

Grant Orsborn led the Bobcats in scoring in the season-ending loss. Orsborn paced Betsy Layne with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds.

Byron Hammond and Nate Hall added eight points apiece for the Bobcats. Hammond led Betsy Layne in rebounding, grabbing seven rebounds.

The Bobcats outscored the Rebels in the last three quarters but fell short in the district tournament game’s final seconds.
