PIKEVILLE – The South Floyd Lady Raiders rolled in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in downtown Pikeville on Tuesday night, defeating the Lawrence County Lady Bulldogs 67-49.
With the win, 58th District title winner South Floyd improved to 26-7 and advances to the region semifinals.
Lawrence County, runner-up out of the 60th District, concluded its campaign 10-22 with the loss.
South Floyd shot 53.3 percent (24-of-45) from the field. The Lady Raiders were 3-of-9 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
South Floyd shot 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line.
Dominating inside, South Floyd outrebounded Lawrence County 41-28.
South Floyd carried a lead out of each quarter. The Lady Raiders outscored Lawrence County 21-11 in the first quarter and led 44-25 at halftime.
South Floyd used a balanced offensive attack to win convincingly.
Taylor Berger led South Floyd with a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Berger led all players in both scoring and rebounding.
Accompanying Berger in double figures for the Lady Raiders, Jesse Tackett scored 12 points, Cheyann Light netted 11 points and Brooke Stumbo contributed 10 points.
Rounding out the South Floyd individual scoring, Katie Moore and Kaylee Moore chipped in eight points and two points, respectively.
Struggling offensively, Lawrence County shot 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the field. The Lady Bulldogs were only 3-of-20 (15 percent) from 3-point range.
Lawrence County shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line.
Alexis Ratliff posted 13 points to lead Lawrence County in scoring. Joining Ratliff in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs, Kelly Davis added 10 points.
In the nightcap on Tuesday night, 57th District runner-up Paintsville edged 59th District champion Shelby Valley 46-45.
