PIKEVILLE – Allen Central’s postseason run ended in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament. The champion out of the 60th District, Lawrence County, defeated 58th District runner-up Allen Central 85-76 in the first round of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in downtown Pikeville on Wednesday night.
With the loss, Allen Central ended its season 14-19.
Lawrence County improved to 22-11 and advanced to the region semifinals with the win.
Productive Lawrence County led at the conclusion of each quarter. The Bulldogs owned a 44-36 lead at halftime and outscored Allen Central 10-7 in the third quarter.
Lawrence County shot 54.3 percent from the field. The Bulldogs were 10-of-21 from 3-point range to shoot 47.6 percent beyond the arc.
Lawrence County shot 78.1 percent from the free throw line.
Allen Central pushed Lawrence County throughout the postseason matchup. The Rebels, however, couldn’t overcome Tim Dalton-led Lawrence County.
Dalton led Lawrence County with a game-high 35 points. Four Bulldogs reached double figures in the scoring column as Jared Wellman netted 21 points, Trey Dotson contributed 17 points and Alex Ratliff added 10 points.
Allen Central shot 47.4 percent from the field. The Rebels were 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from 3-point range.
Allen Central shot 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
Ethan Smith-Mills paced Allen Central with a team-best 23 points. Nearly equalling his teammate’s scoring total, Cameron Nelson registered 22 points for the Rebels in the season-ending setback.
Joining both Smith-Mills and Nelson in double figures for Allen Central. Dylan Caudill netted 14 points and Allen May netted 12 points.
In the other opening round game in the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night, 57th District champion Johnson Central leveled 59th District runner-up Shelby Valley 79-43.
