MOREHEAD – He has already been awarded two weekly honors, but now Morehead State University junior quarterback Austin Gahafer has been recognized on a national scale for his performance at VMI Saturday. He was named the STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Gahafer passed for 447 yards and four touchdowns in the 43-40 setback to the Keydets. He also caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Gahafer’s yardage total was just 12 short of the school single-game record and his 62 pass attempts were just four shy of the program record.
His passing yards were the most by a Pioneer Football League signal-caller since he threw for 458 in a 2013 game. The three-year starter has 5,890 passing yards and 40 touchdown passes in his career. He leads the PFL with 310 yards per game in 2015 and has six career 300-plus yard games.
Gahafer and the Eagles will open the 2015 home schedule on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Kentucky Christian.
